We aim to help our young adult patients to live their lives to the full so we organise our Inspire! social groups and J’s Days out.
The J’s Hospice launched its first young adult group on 2nd April 2011. Eleven young adults came along to the first session and they were joined by The J’s Hospice staff and many volunteers which meant that carers could take some time out for themselves if they wanted to. There were lots of activities on offer including an X Box, complementary therapy, music therapy, art therapy and hand and arm massage. There was also a quiet room available with lovely mood music and lighting.

Since the first group, the patients have renamed the group ‘Inspire!’ and the groups have grown from strength to strength. Now being held at Danbury Mission in Danbury with an average of 25 patients at each group, activities have included Morris Dancing, bell ringing, street dancers, a Caribbean steel band and of course a Christmas party! ‘Inspire!’ allows young adults some time away from carers to socialise with people their own age and offers the opportunity to watch or take part in a range of activities that they may be otherwise unable to do. At the same time, the group allows their families some quality time together to do the things that they can’t always do whilst caring for their young adult, such as spending valuable time with the siblings of the young adult.
The ‘Inspire!’ group will be taking place 8 times in 2017. Please see below for an archive of links to a selection of our previous events:

As well as our ‘Inspire!’ groups, we organise monthly days out called ‘J’s Days’.
They are organised as a result of suggestions that we receive from patients. It gives the young adults and their families or carers the chance to go on a day out with their peers rather than having to attend on their own. These days are facilitated by The J’s staff who make sure they run smoothly.
Trips have included a visit to Hazle's Pottery Barn to create and decorate pottery at wheelchair accessible pottery wheels; a trip to Tropical Wings; a cruise down the River Stort on an accessible barge and a cycling trip at Just Ride Southend which has adapted bicycles for all ages and abilities.
