Chelmsford Marathon & 5k are a big success PDF Print E-mail

Thank you to everyone who took part in the 2016 Chelmsford Marathon and 5K!

The two events took place on Sunday 23rd October and The J’s Hospice charity is very grateful  to all of the people who took part and the fantastic army of volunteers who helped make the day such a big success.

860 people signed up for the Chelmsford Marathon and the race was started at 9am by Matt Mackay, the Drivetime presenter from Heart Essex. The runners set off from outside Shire Hall in the High Street, heading out through the city centre and towards Springfield Park Road, before running through Central Park and then west into the beautiful Essex countryside. They then passed through Writtle College, Roxwell and Willingdale before heading back to the finish at Central Park.

In the men’s race, first across the line was Stuart Leaney who finished in 2 hours and 31 minutes, followed by last year’s winner, Crispian Bloomfield, in 2 hours and 36 minutes and then Samuel Cornforth in a time of 2 hours and 43 minutes. The ladies’ Marathon race was won by Emma Prideaux (who came second last year) in 2 hours and 56 minutes. Paula Rutherford came in second with a time of 2 hours and 57 minutes with Melanie Staley crossing the line in third place with a time of 3 hours and 9 minutes. They were presented with their trophies by The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Patricia Hughes who has organised a busy programme of fundraising events for The J’s Hospice as her charity partner for this year.

Matt Mackay – with the help of our mascot Dynamo the Dolphin - got the 5K race underway from Central Park at 10.15am. 370 people had registered to walk, jog or run the new 5km route through some of the city’s beautiful green spaces and there was a great atmosphere in the park as they set off.

Matt and Dynamo presented James Bosher and Elisavet Mendrinou with their fastest male and female 5K trophies.

We rely on support from the public for 70% of our income so the Chelmsford Marathon and 5K are vital fundraising events for The J’s Hospice. If you didn’t get around to sponsoring a runner and would like to make a donation now, please click here to find out how.
